Quick answer: There is currently no established causal link between vaping and cancer in humans. Vaping does not produce the combustion byproducts and tar that are directly responsible for most smoking-related cancers. Cancer is one of the most serious health concerns associated with smoking, so it is a natural and important question to ask about vaping. The honest answer requires separating what we know from what we do not yet know.

Why Smoking Causes Cancer

Tobacco smoke contains over 70 known carcinogens: cancer-causing chemicals: most of which are produced by the combustion process. Tar, a sticky substance produced when tobacco burns, coats the lungs and contains concentrated carcinogens. Benzene, formaldehyde, arsenic, polonium-210 and many other harmful substances are present in tobacco smoke specifically because of combustion.

Vaping does not involve combustion. There is no burning, no tar and no carbon monoxide. This removes the primary cancer-causing mechanism from the equation.

The Uncertainty About Long-Term Risk

The absence of a current established cancer link is not the same as proof that vaping is completely safe over a lifetime of use. Vaping has only been widespread for around 15 years. Smoking-related cancers typically develop over decades of exposure. We simply do not yet have the long-term follow-up data to fully assess lifetime cancer risk from vaping.

What we can say with reasonable confidence, based on the chemistry, is that the cancer risk from vaping is substantially lower than from smoking: because the primary mechanisms that cause smoking-related cancer are absent.

Formaldehyde production increases significantly when devices are used at very high temperatures or the coil runs dry.
