What Is Vaping?
A clear explanation of vaping, how it works and how it differs from smoking.
Browse Pod Kits Shop E-LiquidsIn a sentence: Vaping is the act of inhaling an aerosol produced by heating e-liquid (a mix of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavourings and usually nicotine) using a battery-powered device. No combustion, no tobacco, no smoke.
Vaping emerged as an alternative to smoking in the mid-2000s and has since become one of the most widely used nicotine delivery methods in the UK. Understanding what it actually is and how it differs from smoking: helps cut through the misinformation that surrounds it.
How a Vape Device Works
Every vaping device, from the simplest disposable to the most advanced mod, works on the same basic principle. A battery powers a heating element (the coil), which heats a wick soaked in e-liquid to just below combustion temperature. This vaporises the liquid into an aerosol that the user inhales. When they exhale, visible vapour is released.
The critical difference from smoking is that nothing burns. There is no combustion, no tobacco, no tar and no carbon monoxide. The aerosol is a mix of tiny liquid droplets from the PG, VG and flavouring ingredients, plus nicotine if present.

What Is in E-Liquid?
E-liquid is the liquid heated to produce vapour. UK e-liquids sold by reputable retailers contain four main ingredients:
- Propylene glycol (PG): carries flavour, produces throat hit, thinner consistency
- Vegetable glycerin (VG): produces vapour clouds, adds slight sweetness
- Flavourings: food-grade compounds creating thousands of flavour options
- Nicotine (optional): available from 0mg to 20mg/ml under UK TPD regulations
How Vaping Differs from Smoking
Who Is Vaping For?
Vaping is designed primarily as a harm reduction tool for adult smokers. The UK's public health position is that vaping exists to help smokers quit: not as a recreational product for non-smokers or young people. It should not be taken up by anyone who does not already smoke, and is not recommended for under-18s.
- Adult smokers trying to quit or reduce cigarette consumption
- Former smokers who have switched to vaping as a less harmful alternative
- Adults who prefer vaping as a nicotine delivery method
