How to Set Up a Pod Vape Kit for the First Time

Setting up a pod kit for the first time takes around five minutes. The process is the same for almost every refillable pod kit on the market: charge, fill, prime, wait and vape. Get this order right and your first draw will taste exactly as it should.

Quick answer: Check the box contains the battery, pod and USB-C cable. Charge the battery fully via USB-C before first use. Remove the pod, open the fill port, fill to 90% with 50:50 nic salt e-liquid and reseal the port. Click the pod into the battery. Wait five to ten minutes for the wick to saturate. If the device has a fire button, turn it on with five rapid clicks. Take a slow, steady MTL draw. The golden rule: never vape a new pod immediately after filling. The five-minute wait prevents burning the coil and spoiling the pod before it has even been used.

What to Check When You Open the Box

Before setting anything up, check the box contents. Most refillable pod kits include the battery unit, one or two pods (sometimes with the coil already installed), a USB-C charging cable and a user manual. Some kits include a spare coil head or a second pod with a different coil resistance. Make a note of the coil resistance printed on the pod (for example 0.6 ohm or 1.0 ohm) as this confirms the device is designed for 50:50 e-liquid.

Check for any protective stickers or silicone bungs on the bottom of the pod. Some manufacturers seal the fill port with a small sticker to prevent leaking during shipping. Peel this off before trying to fill the pod or it will block the port opening.

Step-by-Step Setup: Refillable Pod Kit

1

Charge the Battery First

Connect the USB-C cable from the charging port on the battery to a standard USB power source such as a laptop, a mains adapter or a power bank. Most modern pod kits charge from around 20% battery in 30 to 60 minutes. The LED indicator light on the device will typically turn solid or switch off when the charge is complete. Avoid using a high-wattage phone fast charger for your pod kit as the high current can degrade a small vape battery more quickly than a standard USB output.

2

Remove the Pod and Open the Fill Port

Pull the pod out of the battery. The magnetic connection releases with a light pull. Locate the fill port: on most modern pods this is a small rubber or silicone bung on the side of the pod. Lift the bung with your fingernail to expose the fill opening. Some pods use a top-fill design where the mouthpiece snaps off to reveal the port instead. If you are unsure which type your pod uses, check the user manual inside the box or look at the pod for a small rubber tab.

3

Fill the Pod to 90%

Insert the nozzle of your 10ml e-liquid bottle into the fill port. Tilt the pod to a slight angle to prevent air pockets forming. Squeeze the bottle gently and fill slowly. Stop when the liquid reaches approximately 90% of the pod capacity, leaving a small air gap at the top. Do not fill completely to the brim. The air gap helps maintain correct pressure balance and prevents the liquid from flooding the coil or leaking through the mouthpiece. Once filled, press the rubber bung firmly back into the port until it sits flush with the pod surface. Wipe any drips from the outside of the pod with a tissue.

4

Click the Pod into the Battery and Wait

Slide the filled pod into the battery unit. It will click into position when the magnetic contacts align. Place the device upright on a flat surface. Now wait. This is the most important step and the one most often skipped. Leave the pod to sit for five to ten minutes before taking your first puff. This allows the cotton wick inside the coil to absorb e-liquid from the pod reservoir fully. A wick that is not yet saturated will scorch the moment the coil fires, producing a harsh burnt taste that does not recover even after the wick eventually absorbs liquid.

5

Turn On the Device and Take Your First Draw

If your pod kit has a fire button, press it five times rapidly within two seconds to turn the device on. The LED will flash to confirm activation. Draw-activated devices with no button are already active once the pod is inserted. Take a slow, steady MTL draw: pull vapour gently into your mouth over two to three seconds, pause briefly, then inhale from the mouth into the lungs. Avoid sharp, hard drags. Hard inhales on a pod kit produce condensation in the airflow channel that can cause gurgling. Steady, controlled draws give the best flavour and the most consistent nicotine delivery.

Setting Up a Prefilled Pod Kit

Prefilled pod kits require a shorter setup process as there is no filling involved.

Step Action Notes
1 Charge the battery via USB-C if needed Many devices ship with a partial charge. Check the LED indicator
2 Remove the pod from its packaging and peel off any protective seals or stickers Do not skip this. Stickers over the base contact points prevent the device from detecting the pod
3 Click the pod into the battery You should feel or hear it click into the magnetic mount
4 Wait 60 seconds for the e-liquid to settle against the coil Shorter wait than a refillable new coil as the liquid is already present against the cotton
5 Inhale slowly and steadily Most prefilled kits are draw-activated with no button to press

Frequently Asked Questions

My device is not producing any vapour after setup. What should I check? First check that the pod is fully clicked into the battery and making proper magnetic contact. Remove it and reinsert firmly. If the device has a fire button, confirm it is turned on (five rapid clicks). Check that the battery has charge: a solid red LED usually means the battery is flat. If the battery is charged and the pod is correctly inserted and the device still does not fire, the pod may have a protective sticker on its base covering the contact points. Remove the pod, check the underside for stickers and peel off any you find.
Why does my new pod taste burnt after the first few puffs? The cotton wick was not fully saturated before you vaporised. This is the most common first-time mistake. The cotton scorches instantly when the coil fires without liquid present. The burnt taste does not recover. Replace the pod and allow five to ten minutes after filling before taking the first puff. If you have a draw-activated device, take two or three gentle unpowered puffs (covering the air sensor with your thumb so the device does not fire) immediately after filling to draw liquid into the wick before your first real draw.
Do I need to fully charge the battery before first use? It is recommended but not essential. Most pod kits ship with a partial charge sufficient for an initial test. For the best long-term battery health, complete a full charge before first use and avoid consistently draining the battery to zero before recharging. Most lithium-ion batteries in pod kits last longer when kept between 20% and 80% charge rather than cycled from flat to full repeatedly.
